Leading the Way in Sustainable Shipping: Rotor Sails Installed on mv Afros
At Blue Planet Shipping, we take pride in pushing the boundaries of innovation while protecting our planet. In January 2018, our Ultramax bulk carrier, mv Afros, was equipped with four Anemoi Rotor Sails, making us one of the first shipping companies in the world to integrate wind-assisted propulsion on a bulk carrier.
A Strategic Partnership for Innovation
Rotor Sails utilise the aerodynamic phenomenon known as the Magnus Effect to provide propulsion to the vessel by harnessing wind power to enhance vessel efficiency, reducing net fuel consumption and lowering harmful exhaust emissions.
Developed and installed by Anemoi Marine Technologies, four Rotor Sails mounted on a bespoke deployment system were fitted to the mv Afros. This achievement showcases the power of collaboration between Blue Planet Shipping’s operational expertise and Anemoi’s advanced engineering. Together, we are proving that sustainable shipping is not just achievable – it’s the future of our industry.

The mv Afros’ pioneering approach has already been recognised with the 2018 Lloyd’s List Greek Shipping ‘Ship of the Year’ Award, highlighting our role as a forward-thinking, environmentally responsible ship management company.
