Reducing Plastic Water Bottle Use: A Step Toward a Cleaner Ocean
A Commitment to Sustainable Shipping
Every day, our crews operate across the world’s oceans, meaning they see first-hand the impact of marine pollution. This close connection has inspired us to take meaningful action – starting with a practical yet powerful step: reducing single-use plastic water bottles across our global fleet.
Why We Took Action
The decision to tackle plastic bottle use stemmed from a clear recognition of our environmental responsibilities. Our teams at sea regularly witness the consequences of plastic waste on marine life and coastal ecosystems.
Reducing disposable plastics onboard isn’t just symbolic – it’s a tangible way for us to protect the oceans we depend on.
Before launching the initiative, our vessels collectively used thousands of single-use water bottles each year. While the exact number varied by vessel and voyage length, plastic bottles clearly represented a major share of onboard waste. Eliminating them presented an immediate, high-impact opportunity for positive change.
Our Sustainable Solutions
To replace disposable bottles, we implemented a range of environmentally friendly solutions across the fleet:
- Onboard water filtration systems – Installed on every vessel to provide safe, high-quality drinking water
- Reusable water bottles – Supplied to every crew member, ensuring easy access to water and reducing dependency on disposables
- Refill stations – Set up in shared spaces to make refilling quick and convenient for crew at any time
The program began with a pilot phase on selected vessels, which allowed us to gather crew feedback and refine our approach before expanding it fleetwide. The initiative was supported by training and internal communication to ensure smooth adoption and lasting change.
Positive Environmental Impact
Since the launch of this initiative, the results have been encouraging, and we’re proud to share:
🚫 Over 3,840 bottles have been eliminated per vessel each year
🌊 More than 23,000 bottles saved annually across the fleet since 2019
♻️ Significant reduction in plastic waste and packaging onboard
🧭 Simplified logistics with less need for bottled water storage, handling, and disposal
These changes have led to cost savings and operational efficiencies. While the initial investment in filtration equipment and reusable bottles required upfront costs, the reduction in procurement, storage, and disposal of bottled water has led to ongoing cost savings. Operational efficiency has also improved, with reduced procurement and waste management needs.
Crew Engagement: Driving the Initiative Forward
Our crews have embraced the change with enthusiasm. Many have expressed pride in being part of a company that takes proactive steps toward sustainability. Several crew members have even suggested adding extra water filters on larger vessels to make refilling even easier – another great example of our shared commitment to improvement.
Looking Ahead
The success of this initiative proves that small changes can have a big impact. By rethinking everyday habits and making sustainability part of our operations, Blue Planet Shipping continues to lead the way in responsible, ocean-friendly shipping.
At Blue Planet Shipping, protecting the oceans isn’t just part of our job; it’s part of who we are.
